At first glance, this may resemble customers shopping Black Friday sales at a big box store. But the people pictured here are donating their time to sort and package “comforts of home” care packages to send to military members serving overseas this holiday season.
Members of the American Red Cross of Northern New Jersey Board of Directors coordinated the collection of items for the troops and invited family members and co-workers to get involved. The collection included personal care items, playing cards and puzzles, and an array of comfort foods like granola bars, pretzels, cocoa and candies.
On December 6, Verizon NJ Region President Paul Sullivan, who also serves as Board Chair with the American Red Cross of Northern New Jersey, brought together more than 50 people at Verizon’s Livingston office to help prepare the packages for shipment. Board members, Verizon employees and their family members buzzed around the office space all morning sorting items and filling boxes with goodies. Children wrote notes and drew pictures for the troops to include in the shipment.
Each of the 64 packages was topped off with bundles of holiday greetings from the Red Cross Holiday Mail for Heroes program. Holiday Mail for Heroes invites community members to send cards of thanks, encouragement and holiday cheer to members of the U.S. Armed Forces and our veterans here in New Jersey. The cards are then assembled into festive holiday bundles by our high school Red Cross Club members and volunteers.
Thank you to all who participated with and contributed to this fantastic effort to help make the holidays brighter for those who have served and continue to serve our country!
