Remembering Two Special Friends of the American Red Cross of Central New Jersey

Dorothy ‘Butz’ Noonan

Dear friend of the Red Cross Josephine Dorothy ‘Butz’ Noonan, 89, passed away on February 19. Butz and her late husband William J. ‘Bill’ Noonan dedicated many years of extraordinary devotion and service to the Red Cross, including Bill’s leadership as Chairman of the Board during 2005-2006. Butz and Bill made it their mission to help others when life dealt a difficult hand. The couple’s actions exemplified a genuine culture of caring in the community.

 Helen Koonce Shimberg

Faithful volunteer Helen Koonce Shimberg, 93, of Princeton passed away on February 10. Helen and her late husband Benjamin were devoted Red Cross volunteers who deployed to disaster sites across the country to volunteer at emergency service centers. They often spent weeks in disaster affected areas providing relief to communities in need. Helen deployed to San Francisco following the 1989 earthquake, to St. Louis after severe flooding and to Florida to assist with post hurricane relief efforts. The local Red Cross honored Helen as Outstanding Volunteer of the Year in 1990 for her commitment to helping others.

Both Butz and Helen were outstanding members of the community who were committed to putting the needs of others first. They will be missed.
