How are your children coping with trauma in Sandy’s aftermath? This has been an especially rough week for them. When children see you in a state of alarm, they internalize it immediately. And being young, they lack the skills to think logically through emotional reactions.
To help them start healing emotionally, ask your children what’s on their minds at this time. Allay their fears in a calm voice. Please be mindful that they may feel especially fragile in changed circumstances such as if you’re not able to return home or power hasn’t returned yet- anything that has upset their routine.
It’s healing for them to help you in recovery related activities. If your power is back now and you’re making dinner and watching TV with your children, don’t assume they’re no longer stressed. You may want to talk to them about healing when they come upon Sandy related info on TV.
